Diabetes Education

Despite all of the advances in diabetes treatment, education remains the cornerstone of diabetes management. Differences in diet, exercise levels, stress and other factors may all affect blood sugar levels - meaning the more someone living with diabetes can learn how these factors affect them, the better control they will be able to achieve. Reflecting a strong commitment to quality diabetes education for the community, Goshen Health System's diabetes self-management education program has been awarded continued recognition from the American Diabetes Association. This program offers high-quality education services to the patients it serves.

The Diabetes Education Program

The Diabetes Education program through Goshen General Hospital offers comprehensive diabetes services to the community. Seminars covering topics on health care and support groups are scheduled throughout the year. There is no charge for the seminars. Seminars are held in Goshen, Nappanee, Middlebury and LaGrange.

When a meal is eaten the food breaks down into sugar or glucose. This sugar goes into your bloodstream and the blood sugar then elevates. The body produces insulin which takes the sugar into the body cells to be used for energy. When you have diabetes your body cannot produce enough insulin or can’t use the insulin it does produce in the correct way.
